The Romanian capital Bucharest faces a significant earthquake hazard with a ۵۰% chance for an event in excess of ۷.۶ moment magnitude every ۵۰ years, The last devastating earthquake hit in ۱۹۷۷ when ۳۵ high-rise buildings•were destroyed and ۱۵۰۰ fatalities were counted. An Early Warning System (EWS) based on the traveltime differences between the primary P-wave and the destructive S-wave allows a warning time of about ۲۵ s.
