An efficient three-component reaction of dialkyl acetylendicarboxylates and ۲-Pyrrolidin in the presence of triphenylphosphine produces dialkyl ۲-(۲-Pyrrolidin-N-yl)-۳-(triphenylphosphanylidene)succinate. These phosphoranes undergo mild intramolecular Wittig reaction to produce dialkyl (E)-۲-(۴,۵-dihydro-۳H-pyrrol-۲-yl)fumarate in excellent yields.
