Abstract
Music therapy has appeared as a promising adjunctive treatment for common mental disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and depression. This narrative review investigates the application of music therapy in the treatment of depression and GAD, comparing it with the treatments as usual. Through a comprehensive review of scientific databases, this review synthesizes evidence from meta-analyses and systematic reviews conducted between 2011 and 2023. Music therapy demonstrates effectiveness in reducing depressive symptoms and anxiety levels, with short-term beneficial effects observed in individuals with depression. The therapeutic mechanisms of music therapy involve active and receptive approaches, facilitating emotional expression, communication, and relaxation. While music therapy shows promise in GAD treatment, further research is needed to elucidate its specific mechanisms. This review highlights the potential of music therapy as a valuable therapeutic option for individuals with depression and GAD, emphasizing its role in improving mental health outcomes, and demonstrates a considerable scientific gap in this field.
