In this study, ammonia in human breath is directly determined using ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). In this regard, the calibration curve was obtained after preparation of standard gaseous solutions of ammonia. The analytical results show the linear dynamic range between 10-810 ppb and the detection limit of 6.6 ppb. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was obtained 5.2, 3.4, and 3.0 for 290, 348, and 522 ppb, respectively. Then, amount of ammonia in breath of 8 healthy volunteers is measured and the values were between 236.0-1218 ppb. In addition, the amounts of ammonia were determined 1494-1553 ppb, for 2 kidney patients. In this work, it was shown that ion mobility spectrometry with corona discharge ionization source would be a successful technique for direct analysis of ammonia in human breath.
