In the area of multiphase rotational AC machines, research has been conducted worldwide and interesting works have been reported in the literatures. Nevertheless, in the field of linear multiphase motors such as LIMs which are widely used in industrial processes and transportation applications, considerable attentions have not been attracted yet. Consequently, the main scope of this paper is to suggest the utilization of multiphase LIMs in the electric railway industry. Because by increasing the phase numbers in LIMs superior advantages will be achieved which will be of great interest to electric railway transportation systems. Moreover, vector control of a LIM drive becomes a complex issue due to the end effect phenomena. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to propose an accurate dynamic model of multiphase LIMs suitable for vector control and drive applications considering the end effects. The verification of the developed multiphase LIM model and its related vector control scheme is evaluated by simulation of a seven-phase LIM drive system. In addition, a five-level seven-phase CHB inverter with multiband hysteresis modulation has been successfully applied for drive performance improvements. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed LIM drive is validated by simulation results at different operating conditions.
