Modern power systems need more flexibility in the control and optimization to ensure the generation-load balance, following serious disturbances. Nowadays, due to the increasing number of microgrids (MGS), this issue is more important than past. The MGS mostly use renewable energies to produce electrical power that is varying naturally. These changes cause the classic controllers notto be able to have a suitable performance over a wide range of operating conditions. In response to this challenge, the present paper introduces a new approach by using Genetic Algorithm(GA) to obtain the optimal tuning of the PI based frequency controllers in the MG systems. The proposed control strategy is examined on an MG case study. The performance of the proposed method is compared with the PI based Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique and the conventional PI.
