The plastic extrusion process is an efficient method for production of a wide variety of plastic products such as sheets, pipes, films. In the most common extrusion dies, the final products exit along the extruder axis. This paper is a study on an extrusion die design for sheets at which the final products exit perpendicular to the axis of extruder that is a so-called “lateral die”. Low costs and simplicity in the structure are the most considerable advantages of this type of die. Geometrical profile of a manifold for the die is designed using an analytical method and commercial software. The results showed, although an analytical method can be utilized in design stage, a numerical analysis is required to further optimize the designing details. So as to assess the achieved flow channel, the die was modeled by an FVM software. Acceptable consistencies were observed between the numerical simulations of flow through dies and theoretical results.
