Metal ion-chelating ordered mesoporous carbon materials were recently shown to be efficient polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell catalysts. The structure and properties of these catalysts are largely different fromconventional catalyst materials, thus rendering membrane electrode assembly preparation parameters developedfor conventional catalysts not useful for applications of metal ion-chelating ordered mesoporous carboncatalysts. This necessitates development of a methodology to incorporate metal ion-chelating ordered mesoporous carbon catalysts in the membrane electrode assembly. Here, an efficient method for membraneelectrode assembly preparation using metal ion-chelating ordered mesoporous carbon catalyst materials for membrane electrode assembly fuel cell is developed including effects of catalyst/ionomer loading andcatalyst/ionomer-mixing and application procedures. An optimized protocol for membrane electrode assembly preparation using metal ion-chelating ordered mesoporous carbon catalysts is described.
