خلاصه مقاله:
Background:Small cell carcinoma (SC) is a rare tumor in gastrointestinal tract but esophagus is the mostfrequent site for extra pulmonary SC . It has distinctive histological & clinical features .Theaim of this study was determination of frequency and demographic aspects of SC in comparewith total esophageal cancers.Materials and Methods:In a hospital-based retrospective study through (1989-2008), all pathology reports ofesophageal biopsies which were obtained by endoscopy and had diagnosis of malignancywere extracted. Demographic and histological variables were analyzed by statistical PSWA18.1 BMI soft ware.Results:405 cases of esophageal cancer were obtained .The mean age was 66.3 (±11.8). The youngestand oldest patients were 27 and 100 years old. 245 cases were male and male/ female ratiowas 1.53.Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common type (64.4%) and adenocarcinoma(22%) was the second most. 10.2 % of the cases were poorly differentiated carcinoma withuncertain squamous or adenoid differentiation. Other types of malignancy were 14 cases(3.4%) including 10 cases of SC carcinoma .They were 7 men and 3 women and male/ femaleratio was 2.33. The youngest and oldest patients with SC were 63 and 89 years old and themean age was 72.6.Conclusion:SC carcinoma constituted 2.5% of all esophageal malignancy. It was most common typeamong rare esophageal cancers .The mean age and male/female ratio of SC were higher thanthose which were accounted for all of esophageal cancers. Frequency of SC among totalesophageal cancers was close in similar studies.
