خلاصه مقاله:
During the past few decades, clinical investigators have become increasingly aware of the prevalence and nature of cognitive dysfunction in multiple sclerosis. It is nowestimated that nearly half of all patients will develop cognitive dysfunction during their lifetime and, for many, this decline will cause significant impact on everydayfunction. More recently, studies have attempted to identify potential factors that predict or are associated with cognitive dysfunction in the condition. With increasedunderstanding of the correlates of cognitive dysfunction, clinical investigators are evaluating various treatment options specifically targeting alleviation of thisrelatively common multiple sclerosis symptom. Past research has suggested that cognitive dysfunction can have a devastating impact on patients’ ability to maintain employment, independent living skills, and social relationships. Research in the management of cognitive dysfunction has been limited. During the past two decades, some studies have systematically evaluated symptomatic treatments for cognitive dysfunction in multiple sclerosis. Symptomatic approaches have used either pharmacological agents or cognitive rehabilitation and some of the results have been promising. Cognitive rehabilitation techniques are designed to either restore functions or develop strategies to compensate for cognitive dysfunction. While there have been some promising results suggesting cognitive rehabilitation in multiple sclerosis is effective, no recent studies have been reported. Clearly, this is an area that needs further study .
