This paper investigates the ability of a modified Memetic Algorithm with population management (MMAPM) in simultaneous designing of supplementary controller of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link and Static Var Compensator (SVC) to damp the power system oscillations. A conventional lead-lag structure is considered for the supplementary controllers. The aim of the proposed control strategy is to choose the best controller parameters in such a way that the dominant eigenvalues of the closed-loop system are shifted to the left-hand side of s-plane as far as possible. Using the MMAPM, the parameters of the damping controllers are optimized simultaneously and the interactions among HVDC controller and SVC controller are considered. Also, the Memetic Algorithm without population management (MA) is used to design the coordinated supplementary controllers of HVDC and SVC. The characteristic convergence and time simulation results show that MA and MMAPM algorithms have good capability in solving the problem, but MAPM gives better convergence characteristics
