Applying the smart growth approach in preparing the ground in the northwestern part of Mashhad for sustainable development

Cities in developing countries are witnessing the rapid growth of urbanization, which has included issues and problems in urban planning such as gaps in supply and demand for infrastructure and municipal services, traffic congestion, pollution, natural green cover reduction, typology of suburban settlements, etc. Its destructive effects on the natural and man-made environment can be seen. These prevailing issues will worsen in the coming decades as the urban population grows at an extraordinary rate, highlighting the need for appropriate action. Intelligent development is recognized worldwide as a sustainable solution to existing urban planning problems whose principles are to provide a better quality of life and to promote livable communities. Mashhad is one of the largest cities in Iran with a population of more than ۳.۵ million people,who need to improve and develop infrastructure to improve and improve the quality of life indicators of citizens. This article intends to propose a plan for preparing barren lands in the northwestern part of the Mashhad metropolis using the smart growth approach. In this article, after examining the existing potentials and facilities, forecasting the population and the facilities required for it in the desired area, using the opinions of several urban issues experts, several suggestions were made for land preparation, and finally, the optimal design was selected by evaluating and scoring each. Methodologically, this research can be classified descriptive-analytical.
