Epidemiologic Study of Fatal Traffic Accidents in the Khuzestan Province Iran in ۱۳۸۹

Introduction: Traffic accidents in Iran is the second factor of death whereas, traffic accidents are the ninth cause of death in the world. Therefore, this study has been conducted for epidemiologic assessment of fatal traffic accidents in the Khuzestan province. Methods: This is a desc riptive-analytical study which is performed from March to February ۲۰۱۰ through collection of existing documents of all victims died due to accidents and for obtaining a burial permit their bodies were referred to the Forensic Medicine Centers of Khuzestan cities. Data was analyzed by SPSS software. Findings: Of ۷۸۵۶ investigated cases from ۲۴ cities in Khuzestan province, Totally ۱,۵۱۴ persons died due to traffic accidents. Most of victims (۳۵ percent) were ۱۵-۳۰ years old. Final cause of death in ۴۵ percent of victims was head trauma. Majority of fatal accidents caused by cars in ۵۷ percent and occurred on suburban roads. The highest percentage of traffic accidents victims were car passengers and motorcyclists with ۴۶.۵ and ۲۱.۵ percent, respectively. Conclusion: According to the high percentage of fatal accidents in the country and province, to resolve this problem is necessary the using appropriate scientific programs and investment for reduction of accidents and improving the roads safety.
