The Effect of Laparoscopic Radical Surgery for Endometriosis on Serum Levels of Lipid Profile and Vitamin D

Background & Objective: Endometriosis is associated with the increased risk of coronary heart disease and immune alterations, which may be attributed to the altered lipid profile and decreased serum level of ۲۵–hydroxyl vitamin D (۲۵(OH)D). The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of radical laparoscopic surgery of endometriosis on serum lipid profile and ۲۵(OH)D.
Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on ۴۷ women aged ۱۵ to ۴۵, with body mass index <۳۰kg/m۲, who were referred to Shohaday-eTajrish Hospital, from May ۲۰۱۸ until Jan ۲۰۲۰, for surgical treatment of endometriosis and did not have a systemic disease and did not use oral contraceptives and/or other hormonal therapies three months before surgery were enrolled into the study. The serum lipid profile and ۲۵(OH)D levels of patients two months after surgery were compared with presurgical levels. The results were analyzed by using paired t-test.
Results: A total of ۴۷ patients completed the study (mean age: ۳۲.۸±۷.۵years). About half had no pregnancies (۴۹.۱%). Comparing the serum lipid profile of patients before and two months after surgery showed a significant decrease in triglyceride from ۱۰۸.۴±۴۶.۲ to ۸۶.۴±۵۱.۱ mg/dL (P=۰.۰۰۱), ], total cholesterol from ۱۷۲.۵±۲۶.۵ to ۱۶۰.۰±۲۸.۳mg/dl (P=۰.۰۰۲), and low-density lipoprotein levels from ۹۷±۲۸.۳ to ۸۹.۸±۲۶.۱ mg/dL (P=.۰۰۳); however, high-density lipoprotein and ۲۵(OH)D levels did not show a significant difference (P>۰.۰۵).
Conclusion: the results of the current study showed that laparoscopic resection of endometriotic lesions resulted in a significant reduction of the unfavorable lipid profile after two months, but not ۲۵(OH)D levels.
