Effectiveness of aroma therapy in gastric cancer patients

Introduction and Aims: Gastric cancer is a cancer that develops from the lining of the stomach and its symptoms may include upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite and difficulty swallowing among others. Here, we discuss the effects of aromatherapy and review the cost-effectiveness of it. The most common reason for cancer patients to benefit from aromatherapy is that it can reduce the stress and pain and calm the nerves.Materials and Methods: The study was searched in databases like pubmed, sciencedirect, sid' and ...bet ween ۲۰۱۴-۲۰۱۹.Results: There are several essential oils used in aromatherapy. These essential oils apply their effect by putting their influence on the limbic system. In this article, we review some of their properties including: pain and stress reduction, compatibility with chemotherapy, enhancement of immune system and Treatment of insomnia. Also, we should note that the essential oils have powerful antioxidants properties that could help us in treating cancer. Because of the chemical properties and composition of essential oils, the effects of aromatherapy may vary depending on the type of the used oil. For instance, Sugar cane oil is one of the essential oils that have anti-mutagenic and anti-apoptotic properties which is a key role in treating cancer.Conclusion: Aromatherapy is a type of treatment that can be considered as one of the choices of oncology nurses. These findings should be used for guiding future studies and local health initiative that seek to utilize aromatherapy for gastric cancer patients.
