چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: CT scan is one of the medical imaging methods that is used today to diagnose and treat many diseases in a timely manner. Thus, the widespread use of ionizing radiation in recent years has raised concerns about cancer. Given that a person is exposed to ionizing radiation during a CT scan, they may be at a higher risk of developing cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate unnecessary CT images based on gender and age in three hospitals in Birjand.Materials and methods: The statistical population consisted of ۱,۰۳۴ patients, selected by purposive sampling and the relevant statistical formula. Patients' information included gender, age, electronic code, and the imaged area. All data were extracted by considering all ethical principles and recorded in the prepared checklists. Also, the normality or abnormality of each CT scan was determined based on the report of the radiologist. The obtained information was analyzed by IBM SPSS software .Results: Out of ۱,۰۳۴ patients, ۵۴۷ (۵۲.۹%) were female and ۴۸۷ (۴۷.۱%) were male. The percentage of unnecessary cases was higher in women. Out of ۵۴۷ images of women, ۳۳۷ (۵۵.۶%) were considered unnecessary, and out of ۴۸۷ images of men, ۲۶۹ (۴۴.۴%) were considered unnecessary. Moreover, the age span of patients was between ۱ to ۹۷ years old. The lowest and highest percentages of unnecessary cases belonged to CT scan of age span between ۱-۱۴(۷.۳%) and ۲۵-۴۴(۳۱.۳%).Conclusion: In all tests, ۵۸.۶% of CT scans performed on patients, especially women, were unnecessary. In addition to high doses of radiation endangering the patient's health, these unnecessary procedures impose additional costs on the hospital as well as the patient.
