Psychosocial effects on unwanted pregnancy

Background: Unwanted pregnancy is one of the most troublesome public healthproblems and an important issue of reproductive health worldwide, which imposes a significantsocial and economic burden on individuals and society. Therefore, the present study was conductedto investigate the psycho-social effects of unwanted pregnancy. Methods: The current researchwas a summary review study that was designed in October ۲۰۲۲. In order to search for similararticles, reliable scientific databases such as PubMed/Medline, Scopus and ISI (Web of Sciences)were used. At first, ۸۵ articles were retrieved, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria,finally ۱۵ articles were extracted. Results: Mental health of pregnant women are affected byunwanted pregnancy more than their physical health. Maternal feelings such as being ashamed ofgetting pregnant, worrying about ending the pregnancy through illegal abortion, worrying aboutthe husband not agreeing to abortion, blaming yourself for thinking about abortion or illegalabortion, low self-esteem and life satisfaction, depression, and anxiety about Socio-economicproblems are the effects of unwanted pregnancy. Most studies confirm that unwanted childrenhave more diseases, neurological disabilities, more psychological stress, and less social adjustmentdue to discrimination and suppression of their rational tendencies. Conclusion: The effects ofunwanted pregnancy on the health of the mother and baby are significant, therefore, properpreventive education to families, control of the growth of unwanted births and also illegitimatebirths are recommended by governments to reduce unwanted pregnancy
