Smoking Prevalence and its related to self-control and social support inpeople over ۱۵ years old in Hormozgan province

چکیده مقاله:

Background: Smoking is the first preventable risk factor for chronic diseases, premature deathand disability worldwide. Various factors, such as perceived social support and self-control, areinfluential factors in the emergence of high-risk smoking behavior. The aim of the present studywas investigating the smoking prevalence and its related to self-control and social support inpeople over ۱۵ years of age in Hormozgan province.Method: In this cross-sectional study, ۱۶۳۱ participants were enrolled in the study by conveniencesampling method. Due to the corona virus, the data were collected online using demographicinformation, Tanji self-control and social support questionnaires. The link of the questionnaireswere made available to the participants through social networks (Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram,E-Gap) and through the public relations of healthcare networks. Data were analyzed by statisticaltests of correlation coefficient, independent t test and odds ratio using SPSS-۲۲ software.Result: The results showed , there is a weak but significant correlation between self-control andsocial support (r=۰.۱۱۴, p<۰.۰۰۱), also the t-tes results showed a significant difference betweenthe average scores of social support in the smoking group (۵۵.۲۷±۱۲.۱۵) and the non-smokinggroup (۵۹.۲۲±۶.۲۲). There was a significant difference between the average self-control scores inthe smoking group (۳۰.۷۷±۴.۳۳) and the non-smoking group (۳۶.۵۷±۴.۴۶). The odds ratio of notsmoking in the group of women compared to men (OR=۳.۱۷, CI۹۵%=۳.۰۰۴-۵۴.۵۸۴) wassignificant. Odds ratio of smoking in age groups ۲۹-۳۹ years (OR=۳.۳۶۶, CI۹۵%=۰.۵۱۳-۰.۲۶۱),۴۰-۴۹ years (OR=۱.۴۹۴, CI۹۵%=۲.۰۳۹-۱.۰۹۵) and ۵۰-۸۰ years (OR= ۳.۱۳۳, CI۹۵%=۴.۴۳۷-۲.۲۱۲)was significant compared to the group of ۱۵-۲۸ years old. The odds ratio of smoking in the groupswith post-graduate and bachelor's education (OR=۰.۳۶۲, CI۹۵%=۰.۲۶۶-۰.۴۹۳) and post-graduateand doctorate (OR=۰.۱۲۰, CI۹۵%=۰.۰۷۶-۰.۱۸۸) were significant compared to the illiterate group.Conclusion: According to the findings, the smoking group has lower social support and selfcontrolcompared to the non-smoking group. It is suggested to help prevent and reduce smoking through teaching self-control skills to the smoker and training family members and surroundingpeople in order to provide more social support to the smoker.
