Effective communication in English is a crucial requirement for academic and professional success in many parts of the world. Self-confidence has been identified as a key factor that influences English language proficiency. This literature review aims to synthesize the current research on the impact of self-confidence on English language proficiency and identify effective strategies to enhance learners' self-confidence in language learning. The review reveals that learners with high self-confidence in their English language abilities are more likely to be successful in second language acquisition and have higher levels of English language proficiency. Self-confidence is related to motivation, persistence, and willingness to take risks in language learning. Learners who have high levels of self-confidence tend to have better pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar skills, which are essential for effective communication in English. The relationship between self-confidence and English language proficiency is complex and influenced by various factors such as personal traits, cultural background, and language learning experiences. Effective interventions to enhance learners' self-confidence in language learning are needed to promote successful language learning outcomes. Language teachers and educators can use these interventions, including goal-setting, positive feedback, and self-reflection, to support learners' self-confidence and promote their academic and professional success in English language proficiency.
