A bioassay on tissue cholinesterase activity of Rutilus kutum (Kamensky, ‎‎۱۹۰۱) exposed to some common pesticides in Iran

The toxicological effects of three commonly used pesticides in Iran on the fries of Caspian kutum (Rutilus kutum, Kamensky, ۱۹۰۱) were investigated through determining ۵۰% lethal concentration (LC۵۰) ۹۶‑hr and cholinesterase (ChE) inhibition. The LC۵۰ ۹۶-hr of carbaryl, glyphosate, and malathion were equal to ۱۱.۶۹, ۶.۶۴, and ۰.۹۷ mg L-۱, respectively, that were considered as harmful (۱۰.۰۰-۱۰۰ mg L-۱), toxic (۱.۰۰-۱۰.۰۰ mg L-۱) and very toxic (-۱) compounds for this species. The exposure of fries to sub-lethal concentrations of the pesticides over ۱۵ days indicated that the average of ChE activity in the head and trunk were ۱۰۸۶.۸۹ ± ۱۲۴.۳۴ and ۶۲۷.۳۶ ± ۹۹.۶۰ mU min-۱ per mg protein, respectively, with a significant difference relative to each other. There was a significant difference between fry exposed to all three pesticides and the control group in cholinesterase inhibition. The fries exposed to carbaryl (۸۹۰.۱۲ ± ۲۸.۰۸ mU min-۱ per mg protein) and glyphosate (۸۹۱.۷۷ ± ۳۱.۶۱ mU min-۱ per mg protein) showed lower ChE inhibition than those exposed to malathion (۷۹۰.۰۰ ± ۵۸.۱۴ mU min-۱ per mg protein).
