چکیده مقاله:

Background: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal disease and is a common cause for referral to gastroenterologists and the second cause of absence from the workplace and school. Diagnosis is based on clinical manifestations and ruling out other diseases.  Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on female high school students in Abadan, Iran in ۲۰۱۶. A randomized stratified sampling method was used to select the participants. A total of ۱۰۴۴ individuals were included. A two-part questionnaire was designed by the researcher composed of a demographic form and a part assessing IBS symptoms. Data was analyzed in SPSS V. ۱۸ software using descriptive statistics. The P value less than ۰.۰۵ was considered as being statistically significant. Results: The age range of participants was ۱۴-۱۸ years with the Mean±SD age of ۱۶±۲ years. The findings of this study showed that the most common symptoms of IBS were abdominal pain (۶۶.۴%), diarrhea (۴۶.۷%), and constipation (۴۲.۵%). Conclusions: The symptoms of IBS are frequent among high school female students; therefore, there is a need for more attention to this issue.
