Gender Difference and Emotional Intelligence in Golestan University of Medical Sciences’ Students

Background and Objective : The relation between gender and emotional intelligence has been considered in different studies and it seems that females have higher emotional intelligence. ­We aimed to determine gender difference in emotional intelligence among students of Golestan University of medical sciences.   Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted, ۲۰۰۸, on ۱۸۰­ students selected randomly.­ For data collection, we used a valid and reliable­(r= ۰.۷۵ to ۰.۸۵)­emotional intelligence questionnaire named Cyberia shrink. Descriptive statistics and independent t-test (p ≤ ۰.۰۵) were used to analyze the data, using SPSS-­۱۶ software.   Results: As the results show, There is significant difference­(P=۰.۰۳)­between Females’ emotional intelligence (۱۰۴.۲) and males’ (۱۰۰.۱). Female students have higher scores in their self control, self awareness and social awareness (P<۰.۰۵). There is no the self motivation and social skills between males and females are not significantly different. Conclusion: ­ There is no difference in all components of emotional intelligence between two genders, but we can say self control and social awareness can be influenced by gender .
