The Role of Childhood Trauma and Cognitive Flexibility in the Addiction Tendency of Adolescents

Introduction: Substance use among the younger generation is more prevalent than in previous generations and its destructive effects are undeniable, as a result, it is necessary to identify the factors that lead to addiction. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the role of childhood trauma and cognitive flexibility in the addiction tendency of adolescents. Methods: The population of the study included all adolescent boys of Zahedan City. ۱۰۰ individuals were selected by Convenience Sampling as the sample of the study. The research tools were the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI), and Effective Factors in Addiction Tendency Questionnaire. Results: The results showed that there was a significant correlation between childhood trauma and addiction tendency (r=-۰.۹۴۲, P=۰.۰۱), and a negative correlation between cognitive flexibility and addiction tendency (r=-۰.۹۹۳, P=۰.۰۱). Conclusion: Childhood trauma was found to correlate with addiction tendency, while there was a negative correlation between cognitive flexibility and addiction tendency. From this finding, it can be concluded that childhood trauma and cognitive flexibility play a significant role in addiction tendency.
