The effect of the mixture of lactic probiotics on the antioxidant and total oxidant status of the kidney tissue of rats exposed to gentamicin

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVESGentamicin is one of the aminoglycoside antibiotics that is still used in the treatment of infections, especially against Gram-negative bacteria, but one of its main side effects is nephrotoxicity. This study aims to investigate the probiotic mixture (Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus heloticus) on the antioxidant and oxidant status of the total kidney tissue of rats exposed to gentamicin.MATERIALS AND METHODSIn this experimental study, ۲۱ adult male mice with a weight of ۲۰۰-۲۵۰ grams were divided into three control groups, receiving gentamicin (۱۰۰ mg/kg), receiving gentamicin (۱۰۰ mg/kg) + receiving probiotic mixture (۱۰۹ CFU/Ml). Intraperitoneal injection of gentamicin was performed for ۸ days and gavage of probiotics was performed for ۳۰ days. After the treatment period, the kidney tissue was extracted to check the antioxidant capacity and antioxidant status. Data analysis in different groups was done with SPSS software and one-way variance statistical test and P<۰.۰۵ was considered significant.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONThe results showed a significant change in the level of antioxidants; It showed a decrease in the total antioxidant capacity of TAC and an increase in the total antioxidant status of TOS in the group receiving gentamicin (P<۰.۰۰۱). Also, the change in the level of antioxidants TAC and TOS in the group treated with probiotic mixture was shown to be significant compared to the group receiving gentamicin(P<۰.۰۵).CONCLUSIONBased on the obtained results, the protective effect of the probiotic mixture on the induced toxicity of gentamicin on the antioxidant capacity of the kidney tissue was shown. This effect can be by reducing the oxidative stress caused by free radicals and reducing the amount of lipid peroxidation caused by gentamicin.
