The role of engineered probiotics for the management ofphenylketonuria

It has been suggested that engineered probiotics (EPs) have potential role in the treatment of congenital disease. The current review aimed to assessed the interventional studies which evaluated the effect of EPs on the phenylketonuria (PKU). To retrieve the related publications, three databases (PubMed, Web of Sciences and Scopus) were searched from the inception up to January ۲۰۲۳. In the primary step, ۶۶ articles were obtained. After screening their title/abstract based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, ۱۱ papers were included, and once full-text evaluation was performed, only four articles were taken. The studies on PKU and EPs revealed that to obtain phenylalanine (Phe) metabolizing strain, manipulation is needed. The study concluded that EPs can potentially manage or treat PKU.
