Psychological and social consequences associated with unintended pregnancies: a brief review

Introduction: One of the most common problems in society is unwanted pregnancy, which has adverse effectson the individual, family, and society, so the present study was designed to review the most commonpsychological and social consequences associated with unwanted pregnancy.Methods: The present study was a summary review that was designed in ۲۰۲۳. To search for keywords, ۱Persian database (SID) and ۲ English databases (PubMed and Google Scholar) were used. At first, ۵۳ articleswere retrieved, after removing duplicate articles and articles published in conferences and conventions, finally۱۲ articles were selected for data extraction.Results: By examining various studies, it was found that unwanted pregnancy has consequences that includemental and emotional pressure, lack of physical, economic and social preparation. People with unwantedpregnancy experience a high level of anxiety and stress. Accepting an unwanted pregnancy from a pregnantwoman can lead to various psychological and physical consequences, including postpartum depression, druguse during pregnancy, and feeling more pain during childbirth due to unpleasant feelings and emotions duringpregnancy. Abortion is one of the methods that these people choose, but due to its illegality and illegitimacy, itleads to feelings of guilt and torment of conscience.Conclusion: In general, unwanted pregnancy imposes many psychological, physical and socio-economicconsequences on the individual and the society. The use of safe prevention methods, marital and psychologicalcounseling can largely prevent the occurrence of unwanted pregnancy and its related complications
