The effect of Cumin during menstruation; a brief review

Introduction: There are two types of Cumin, green and black .Cumin is known by the scientific name CuminumCyminum. Cumin has a very aromatic and spicy smell. Many medicinal plants were used in ancient times.Cumin is one of the medicinal plants that can be found in most parts of Iran and has significant effects inreducing bleeding and menstrual pain. The current study was designed to review the effect of Cumin duringmenstruation.Methods: The present study is a summary review that was designed in ۲۰۲۳. Three databases, PubMed, GoogleScholar and ISI, were used to search for related articles. The selected keywords included Cumin, Menstrualpain, Menstrual bleeding. The inclusion criteria included the availability of the full text of the articles, and theexclusion criteria included the articles published in conferences or convention. At first, ۶۳ articles were selectedand after removing duplicate articles, ۳۴ articles were finally examined.Results: By examining various studies, it was found that Cumin reduces bleeding and pain caused bymenstruation with its effect on muscle contraction and antispasmodic effects. Cumin compounds include:Terpen called Karven or Myrcene, Limonen, Alpha and Beta Pinene, among which Alpha and Beta Pinene haveanti-inflammatory properties, Karven and Limonene prevent the effects caused by prostaglandins. In thereviewed studies, it is recommended to use Cumin along with olive oil through the vagina, which is used toprevent heavy bleeding.Conclusion: Chemical drugs have many side effects, the most common side effects being digestive side effects.Also, in addition to the side effects of chemical drugs, the economic costs and the import of raw materialsrequire a lot of effort for the individual in the society. Therefore, it is suggested to use more herbal medicineslike Cumin for pain relief.
