Nurses' experiences of missed nursing care in Iran: A systematic review

Introduction and purpose: The main goal of nursing is to provide comprehensive nursing care that is tailoredto the needs of patients. However, the occurrence of missed nursing care in Iran's healthcare system isundeniable and is considered a threat to comprehensive and safe nursing care quality. Investigating nurses'experiences of missed nursing care can provide valuable information to identify effective factors. Therefore, thecurrent review study investigated nurses' experiences of missed nursing care and the factors affecting it in Iran.Method: Databases including Scopus Embase, PubMed/Medline, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and CochraneLibrary (Wiley) to find studies in the English language and three databases Magiran, SID, and Irandoc to retrievestudies in the Persian language in the range of ۲۰۰۶ were investigated until ۲۰۲۳. A search for unpublisheditems was conducted in Google Scholar and Irandoc. Search terms include "Qualitative study", "Qualitativeresearch", "Exploratory research", "Exploratory study", "Qualitative research and mixed methods", "Nurses'experience", "Missed nursing care" and "Iran" in combination. It was suitable with Boolean operators. Studiespublished in languages other than English and Farsi, expert opinions, conference abstracts, case reports, andstudies without full text, as well as quantitative studies, were excluded from the reviews. Evaluation andvalidation of qualitative studies using program tools Critical Appraisal Skills (CASP) were conducted.Results: The results of the content analysis were divided into four general categories: (۱) types of missed nursingcare (۲) the impact of missed nursing care on patients (۳) the impact of missed nursing care on nurses (۴) reasonsfor missing The departure of these cares. Also, the findings of this study showed that the set of factors affectingthe formation of lost nursing care could be categorized into three sets "environmental factors", "organizationalfactors" and "individual factors".Conclusion: This qualitative systematic review provides new insight into the lived experiences of nurses fromlost nursing care in Iran; According to the findings of this study, the factors related to healthcare organizationsand the work environment are especially predictors of missing nursing care. Based on this, appropriate policiesshould be adopted by nursing managers and leaders to ensure the reduction of underlying factors. The formationof missing nursing care is essential.
