Providing reuse-water from municipal wastewater using green safe flocculant: Application in COD and Turbidity reduction

Municipal wastewater (MWW) generation as results of human activities such as urbanization and industrialization become one of the main environmental problem. In this study, we suggested an ecofriendly approach for sustainable MWW treatment using pomegranate seed powder (PSP) as a novel natural flocculant for efficient COD and turbidity reduction. The effect of PSP dosage, initial pH and treatment time were investigated. According to the results ۱.۵ g/L PSP could remove ۸۵% and ۹۰% of COD and turbidity, respectively after ۳۰ min treatment. The PSP showed better performance under alkaline conditions (pH > ۷). The results revealed that PSP treatment could efficiently reduce COD and turbidity level to bellow the standard level for water reuse: COD < ۵۰ mg/L and turbidity < ۲۰ NTU. This study suggests MWW treatment with PSP as a promising approach for providing reuse water from wastewater.
