چکیده مقاله:
The present study was designed to compare the effects of three modalities of readinginstruction (i.e., technology as a replacement, technology as a supplement, and no technology at all) on intermediate-level EFL learners' overall reading ability. To that end,a total of 297 English translation majors at Payam-e-Noor University of Ramsar were administered the TOEFL Reading Comprehension Subtest (TOEFL-RBC) to establish that they were homogenous, and that they stood at an intermediate level in terms of theirreadingability. As the research sample 65 of the subjects gained the necessary entry qualification for the experiment thus forming three homogeneous groups (X1: technology as a supplement, X2: technology as a replacement, and C: control group). Therefore, their scores were used as pretest scores and were then compared against theirscores from the posttest (i.e., a second administration of the reading module of the sameTOEFL test at the end of the experiment) for data analysis purposes. Finally, oneANOVA tests were conducted to test the null hypotheses of the study at the significance levelof .05. The results indicated that technology as a supplement(Mx1=26.04) as comparedto the two other modes_ i.etechnology as a replacement (Mx2=21.68),and no technology at all (Mc =23) can be considered to be the most effective modality of presentation for areading course, and that computer technology can by no means replacethe reading classroom, so long as it is only a means and not an end in and of itself.
