PEM fuel cells as the heart of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) consume hydrogen to produce electrical energy needed for vehicle traction. One of the possible strategies for production of hydrogen required for future FCVs is ammonia (NH3) cracking. Since ammonia production is readily an easy and widely performed chemical process, hydrogen production by ammonia will need the least infrastructure. Micro reactors with high reactive surface ratio are a good choice to be adopted as ammonia cracking device. In the current study, a numerical model based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is presented to investigate coupled chemical-thermal processes at the pore-scale, in which several sets of transport phenomena such as fluid flow, species transport, heat transfer and chemical reaction are taken into account. Moreover, to model the species transport an active approach is applied which is more accurate relative to common passive approaches. The model is then employed to simulate the reactive transport in five different microreactors with dissimilar structural parameters. Comparison of results shows that the role of these structural parameters on the microreactor performance is significant.
