On Design of Carrier Synchronization System Using Bayesian Filtering Framework

Carrier synchronizers are an important parts of digital communication receivers. Conventional structures have some problems for tracking inputs with high dynamics in wireless applications. In this paper, two Bayesian filtering techniques based on Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and Particle Filter (PF) are used in order to track inputs with high dynamics. At first, the total structure of the carrier synchronization system based on three different approaches contain Phase-Locked Loop (PLL), EKF algorithm and PF algorithm is introduced. After that, a complete transmitter/receiver system considering the effects of noise, channel distortions and impairments are simulated. Results shows that the EKF and PF algorithms are superior over conventional methods especially at low SNRs.
