This paper studies the pure axially tension stress and combined loading effects of a cylindrical shell and an individual single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT). The results of finite element (FE) simulations of SWCNT using the ANSYS software are presented, and are compared with the classical (local) and structural mechanic approaches. Critical axial stress and deflections are calculated for all the cases. A type of stress is considered in this study, namely, the elastic stress regards to axis of column which depends on the diameter-to-thickness ratio of CNT. The model serves as a link between computational chemistry and solid mechanics by substituting discrete molecular structures with an equivalent-continuum model. The FE model has been used to investigate elastic behavior and properties of SWCNT.
