چکیده مقاله:

The soil of large areas is contaminated by heavy metals. Agricultural lands and gardens are affected, additionally mine tailings and waste deposits contain metals. Conventional remediation methods (e.g. soil washing) to eliminate the problems are comparably expensive. Certain wild plants, called hyperaccumulators, are able to accumulate large amounts of heavy metals in aerial parts. This property may be exploited for the extraction of metals from soil or water (phytoremediation). In this study the ability of 12 plants to accumulate lead, zinc, iron and mangenes were compared in Ahangaran lead- zinc mine. Plants and the associated soil samples were collected and analysed for total metal concentrations by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer and then, biological absorption coefficient (BAC), the ratio of an element in plants to its concentration in soil, for each element, calculated. Results showed that some of sudied species with a high biological absorption coefficient were suitable for phytoremediation.
