Checking the level of PSA in prostate cancer at recent 4 years in Shahid beheshti hospital of Kashan

چکیده مقاله:

Background and objectives: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. PSA is a tumor marker for prostate cancer that is made exclusively by the prostate and increases to high levels in prostate cancer. PSA is used in diagnosis of prostate cancer and control the response to therapy and tumor recurrence after treatment. High levels of PSA can indicate prostate cancer. Abnormal values often goes up proportional to the intensity and extent of cancer, but this is not always constant and reliable. So we decided to check PSA levels in patients with prostate cancer. Materials and methods: In this study patient s PSA level with the age range of 51 to 93 years and average of 75.3 were measured with RIA method. Findings: Results achieved was: 15% of patients had the level of PSA < 4ng/ml, 13% of the PSA levels was between 4 and 10ng/ml, 32% were between 10 to 20 ng/ml and 40% were > 20 ng/ml. The findings analyzed by statistical tests and SPSS software. Discussion and conclusions: : The results achieved in this study shows that 40% of patients with prostate cancer have PSA levels higher than 20 ng/ml, and therefore higher levels of this value requires more detailed patient reviews. But 15% of patients, despite the existence of cancer, have normal PSA ,with considering 85 percent sensitivity of the PSA test obtained in this study, patients with strong clinical suspect and normal PSA should be under biopsy
