Evaluating the frequency of Delirium after hip fractures surgery in patients aged more than 60 years in Orthopedic Ward of Poursina Hospital in Rasht

Background: Delirium is a recurrent cognitive disorder, which is one of the most common neurologic diagnosis among patients, underwent pelvic surgeries. This complication occurs in a short time and early diagnosis results in early treatment. Thus, the current study was done to assess frequency of delirium and determine the effective factors of incidence in patients with pelvic surgeries Materials & Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The research society is all of the patients older than 60 years old admitted in orthopedic reward due to pelvic surgery. Data analyzing tools consists of demographic questionnaires and tests describing mental status based on DSM-IV questionnaires. All of the patients were examined before surgery, after 6-24-48-72 hours after surgery and before discharge by the researcher and their cognitive status and average cognitive score were recorded Results: The findings show that 67 of 252 patients were men (26.6%) and 185 patients were women (74.4%). The average age was 72.9 +_7.33 years old. 61% of patients were married and 31% were single. Overall incidence of delirium was 18.3%. Among studied variables, the history of smoking, consumption of psychiatric medications and the type of anesthesia had direct effect on the incidence of delirium Conclusion: The data showed high prevalence of delirium in studied patients. On the basis of the obtained findings, it is very important to analyze delirium routinely exactly after surgery and also consider effective factors before surgery and control them in order to control these factors
