Socio-cultural determinants of obesity: A qualitative content analysis

چکیده مقاله:
Background: Obesity is one of the most important public health problems in the world that has extensive negative consequences. Identifying the contexts and causes of obesity is vital to design obesity effective prevention programs and with due attention to the importance roles of culture and society in forming and recognizing diseases, the present study aims to identify obesity socio -cultural factors. Methods: The present qualitative study was conducted in the Mukryan Kurdish region in West Azerbaijan province in Iran at 2017. Data were collected by deep interview, focus group and dialogue with 111 obese and thin men and women and various fields experts who were selected by purposive sampling, and analyzed by qualitative content analysis technique.Results: Data analysis results were classified in 6 categories and 21 subcategories which main categories included the advent of modern waves, socio-cultural norms, problematic of slimming, local culture of nutrition, lack of institutionalization of sport, and low health literacy. Conclusion: Paying attention to the obesity socio-cultural determinants in planning, interventions, and obesity policies can, apart from guiding them to the right path, be effective for obesity prevention interventions, reducing costs in long term, and reducing diseases and deaths from obesity. The present study can be considered as the basis for future interventions in obesity prevention by presenting a new insight about socio-cultural determinants and emphasizing on their importance.
