Prevalence of Congenital Heart Disorders in Patients Referred to Pediatric Cardiology Clinic with Congenital Gastrointestinal Malformations

Background: Because of high prevalence of coexistence of congenital heart and gastrointestinal disorders, it is necessary to evaluate the prevalence of congenital heart disorders in congenital gastrointestinal malformations and may indicate the importance of congenital heart disorders in patients with congenital gastrointestinal malformations. Methods: This study was performed in the pediatric cardiology clinic of Imam Reza Hospital on the medical records of all patients referred to Imam Reza Hospital Pediatric Cardiology Clinic with congenital gastrointestinal malformations for evaluation of congenital heart disorders during 1381-1396. Results: A total of 228 patients diagnosed with congenital gastrointestinal malformations were referred to the Pediatric Cardiology Clinic for evaluation of congenital heart disorders, of whom 120 (52.6%) had congenital heart disorders. The most common cardiac disorders in these patients were VSD, PDA, PS and ASD, respectively. The most common gastrointestinal malformations in patients with congenital heart disorders were imperforate anus, umbilical hernia, esophageal atresia, obstruction due to atresia, or intestinal stenosis, respectively. Conclusions: Because of importance of congenital heart disorders in patients with gastrointestinal malformations, cardiac consultation is recommended for all of these patients prior to gastrointestinal surgery.
