Usefulness of Klemetti Index in CBCT in Assessment of Osteoporosis in Postmenopausal Women

Background and Objective: Bone densitometry is considered as the gold standard test for diagnosis of osteoporosis. however, it is an expensive method for widespread use in postmenopausal females who may have osteoporosis. Klemetti index is defined as mandibular cortical bone morphology classification ,which has been initially used in panoramic images of the patients . In recent researches Klemetti index has been used for assessment of osteoporosis as screening tool .Materials and Methods: Search engines ; PubMed , Index Medicus , Data Base were used for searching studies about assessment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with Klemetti index in Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Key words [ Osteoporosis ] , [Klemetti index ] and [ CBCT] were recruited for search. The search was terminated in October 2019 .Finding: We found three studies about usefulness of Klemetti index in CBCT of postmenopausal women .The first study was performed in 2018 in Brazil and included 54 postmenopausal females with mean age 58 in normal and osteoporotic groups .The second study was done in 2016 in Egypt in 50 postmenopausal females dividing in two normal and osteoporotic groups .Third study was a descriptive research and included 30 postmenopausal females in Brazil.Conclusion: The first and second studies demonstrated validity of Klemetti index for differentiation of osteoporotic and normal postmenopausal females by CBCT . while , the third study showed low validity of Klemetti index
