On the Compact Designs of Low Power Reversible Decoder and Multiplexer

Conventional digital circuits dissipate a significant amount of energy because bits of information are erased during the logic operations .Thus , if logic gates are designed such that the information bits are not destroyed, the power consumption can be reduced dramatically. Reversible logic is emerging as an important research area having its application in diverse fields such as low power CMOS design, digital signal processing, cryptography, quantum computing and optical information processing . Researchers have already proposed reversible designs of many common arithmetic and logical units, including adders, multipliers , shifters, and even registers. Very little focused work has been done specifically on reversible decoder and multiplexer design. In this paper we propose a novel reversible decoder and multiplexer design and analyze it in terms of its quantum cost, garbage outputs, and quantum delay. Some lower bounds on the number of gates and garbage outputs of the proposed decoder and multiplexer circuits have also been proposed. The proposed reversible decoder and multiplexer designs were verified through simulations using Verilog HDL and simulation results are presented.
